Surabi Bandung
Maybe it's oke to call it a traditional Sundanese pancake. The ingredients are almost similar anyway. It is made from flour, but normally they use rice flour. Then it is mixed with coconut milk. The way of cooking it is to pour the ingredients onto the bowl made of clay, and heat it on top of a traditional stove. The fuel they use to make the fire is using coal. If not, they also use firewood (often taken from the ruin of the bankrupt food stall nextdoor.)
So far, do you think it already comes closer to a pancake? Well, the other difference is probably on the topping choice. For the spicy one, they use a mix of oncom (made of fermented soy bean) and chili. But you can also try to pour the surabi with sweet liquid palm sugar. Sounds delicious? So, where can you find them in Bandung?
If you are a morning person, you can easily find it on some intersection nearby where you live. You can wake up in the morning and have a light morning run or jogging, and buy surabi for your breakfast back home. In the place where I live, I can find it in Gegerkalong Street (on Setiabudi street), in Gegerkalong market, or in Sukajadi Atas (upper part of Sukajadi Street). But in Bandung, surabi comes also in a more modern topping.
If you want a more 'familiar' taste, at Setiabudi street there is an emerging famous surabi seller who is creative enough to make different kind non-traditional topping. Cheese for instant. You can have surabi with cheese, or chocolate, or even strawberry jam. Some menu also offers surabi with banana slices, and other kinds of topping that you can think of. If you're interested, please come to Surabi Enhaii.
The name Surabi Enhaii is taken from the name of the famous tourism school where the seller open their stall in front of this university. Surprisingly, this Surabi Enhaii became famous for Bandung citizen, and many youngsters hanging out here. I guess they don't come here only for the surabi, they also come here to see the visitors. Trying to find new girlfriend or boyfriend.
